Smudging Air
Paintings in this series were created between 1996 and 2018. Predominantly monochromatic, these paintings feature the wide adaptability range of ink as it can be diluted, saturated, contained and overflow. As a medium, ink is always reacting to the absorption ability of its environment. Similar to humans, we shape our environments as much as our environments shape us. The series title refers to smudging air, an indigenous purification ritual emulated across the world, from churches to temples to modern aromatherapy all straddling a fine line between science, spirituality and myth. Like Rorschach inkblots and Feynman fractals, the pieces explore how order and chaos meet in the mind of the beholder, while smoke rises as spirit-like forms.
